What You Need to Know About Xarelto

Xarelto is a prescription blood-thinner with sales in excess of $2 billion. Since its release on the market in 2011, however, thousands of serious, disabling or fatal bleeding event reports were submitted to the FDA. These bleeding events may have no means of reversal once they occur, resulting in life-threatening injuries. Lawsuits are now underway to compensate Xarelto victims and their families.

Bayer and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. are facing several Xarelto lawsuits alleging that the drug is dangerous and defective. Currently, there is no antidote available for Xarelto, a fact plaintiffs say the drug companies didn’t publicize. Because of this, the lawsuits claim, doctors have no effective means of stopping Xarelto users from bleeding in the event of an emergency. Plaintiffs in the lawsuits allege serious and fatal injuries, including pulmonary embolism, hemorrhaging and gastrointestinal bleeds, from use of the drug.

Why are Xarelto Lawsuits Being Filed

Hemorrhaging, or excessive bleeding, can be fatal in patients and traditionally, older classes of anti-coagulants had an antidote agent available to reverse the effects of unintended, excessive bleeding. However, there is no antidote available for Xarelto. Patients using Xarelto are therefore vulnerable to hemorrhaging that cannot be reversed, which can be fatal. Drug manufacturers have a legal duty to disclose the risks associated with the use of their products. Lawsuits allege that Bayer and Jannsen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Xarelto, misled the public by concealing evidence of the dangerous complications and misrepresented the safety of the drug in marketing. Time may be limited to file a claim, so call today. This will cost you nothing unless you receive a settlement. Furthermore, we will pay all costs and expenses associated with pursuing your case. If your case is unsuccessful, you owe us nothing.

Xarelto Lawsuits allege the drug manufacturer was negligent in the following ways:

  • Failing to warn the public about the risks and side effects of the drug
  • Intentionally concealing information about the drug
  • Not sufficiently testing the drug
  • Marketing and selling an unsafe and dangerous drug
  • Warn patients and doctors about not having an antidote
  • Provide adequate warning that seniors are at increased risk of Xarelto bleeds

Xarelto Lawsuits

Xarelto is the most prescribed drug in its class, and there were over 13 million prescriptions written by 2016. However, once the public became aware the drug also could cause serious and sometimes deadly bleeding events and there are no current antidotes available, they began to file lawsuits against the manufacturers of the drug.

JAN 2011
Xarelto, also known as Rivaroxaban, is manufactured by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Jannsen Pharmaceuticals. Initially, Xarelto was part of a new group of anti-coagulants touted as new alternatives to the traditional blood thinners available to patients.
JUN 2013
The FDA issued a warning letter to the maker of Xarelto, noting that a print advertisement for the drug minimized the risks associated with it and made a misleading claim. Specifically, the FDA warned that including the risk information without any of the emphasis that was included on the benefits section made it seem as though the risks were not important. The agency noted in its letter that the most common adverse reactions with Xarelto were bleeding complications.
2014
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) released an October 17, 2013 report indicating Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) ranked tenth among drugs cited by the FDA in connection with Adverse Event Reports. Adverse Events reported to the FDA in 2012 included 2081 serious incidents and at least 151 deaths.
MAY 2014
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) highlighted the increasing complication rate among patients taking Xarelto, also known as Rivaroxaban. The complication rate reflected a higher number of adverse event rate than ratings previously associated other anti-coagulant medications.
DEC 2017
Drug makers Bayer and Johnson & Johnson ordered by a jury to pay $28 million in a Pennsylvania court because they failed to warn patients about the risks of internal bleeding when using Xarelto, although a judge later overturned the verdict.

People injured by Xarelto may be eligible to recover monetary compensation for:

  • Past and future medical Bills
  • Pain and Suffering
  • Lost Wages
  • Other Damages
